Ilex crenata Kimne

Ilex crenata ‘Kinme’, commonly known as Japanese holly, is a popular choice for both traditional and contemporary gardens due to its dense foliage and compact growth habit. With an ultimate height and spread of 2.5–4 metres, this bushy, evergreen shrub offers structure and privacy while requiring minimal upkeep. Its small, dark green leaves resemble those of boxwood, making it an excellent substitute for Buxus hedging, particularly in areas affected by box blight.

This hardy and resilient shrub (H6) thrives in a range of soil types, including loam, sand, and chalk, provided the soil is well-drained or moist but well-drained. It flourishes in full sun or partial shade and is well-suited to south, west, or east-facing aspects. Highly adaptable, it can be used in formal hedging, specimen planting, or as a striking topiary feature.

Ilex crenata ‘Kinme’ is an excellent addition to courtyards, patios, and ornamental borders, and it performs well in containers for smaller spaces. It produces small, black ornamental berries that add seasonal interest, though they are not edible. Care should be taken when handling the plant, as gloves are recommended due to its tough, woody stems.
