Quercus ilex (Holm Oak) Pleached Tree
Quercus ilex, commonly known as Holm Oak, is a robust evergreen species that makes an excellent choice when trained as a pleached tree. With its dense, leathery dark green foliage and strong architectural presence, it offers year-round privacy and an elegant, formal structure to gardens and landscapes.
Native to the Mediterranean but perfectly suited to the UK climate, Holm Oak tolerates salt-laden winds, drought, and urban pollution, making it a versatile solution for both rural and city planting schemes. Its adaptability to coastal conditions also makes it a strong candidate for screening and boundary planting in exposed areas.
Pleached Quercus ilex trees form a high-level canopy above a clear stem, creating a green ‘wall’ effect that’s ideal for above-fence screening or defining garden rooms. Its evergreen habit ensures consistent coverage, and the tree responds well to regular shaping to maintain a tidy, square frame.
We usually supply pleached Holm Oak with clear stems around 180–200 cm, and frame sizes typically ranging from 120 × 120 cm to 150 × 150 cm. Other frame heights and widths can be sourced upon request depending on your design requirements.
