Planting an Orchard – Burley, Hampshire
Project Overview
This project involved planting an orchard in Burley, a picturesque village within the New Forest in Hampshire. The client had a large field on their property that they wanted to transform into a productive orchard, featuring a variety of fruit-bearing trees. The spacious area offered excellent growing conditions, with well-drained soil and good sun exposure, making it ideal for cultivating a diverse range of trees.
Objective
The primary objective was to create an orchard that would provide the client with a wide variety of fruit throughout the year. The design needed to accommodate different species of trees while ensuring that they had enough space to grow and flourish. The client desired both traditional British varieties and more exotic species that could thrive in the New Forest climate.
Challenges and Considerations
The main consideration for this project was ensuring proper spacing and alignment of the trees to allow for healthy growth and sufficient sunlight exposure. The field’s open aspect meant that the trees would benefit from full sun, but windbreaks were considered to protect the more delicate species from the stronger winds sometimes experienced in the New Forest.
Before and After
Before planting, the field was an open expanse, offering little more than grassland. After planting, the orchard is set to become a productive and beautiful landscape, with each tree carefully positioned to ensure optimal growth. Over time, this orchard will provide an abundance of fruit, enhancing both the property’s utility and its visual appeal.

Plant Selection
A selection of fruit trees was chosen to suit the varying conditions of the field and meet the client’s desire for variety:
- Ficus Carica (Common Fig): Known for its ability to thrive in warm, sheltered spots, this fig variety was chosen for its sweet, succulent fruit and its capacity to grow well in Burley’s temperate climate.
- Eriobotrya Japonica (Loquat): This exotic tree adds a touch of the Mediterranean to the orchard, producing small, tangy fruits. Its evergreen nature also provides year-round visual interest.
- Malus ‘Rode Boskoop’ (Apple): A traditional apple variety selected for its versatility, providing both cooking and eating apples. The hardy nature of this tree ensures it will produce reliable crops for years to come.
- Prunus avium ‘Stella’ (Sweet Cherry): Known for its large, dark red cherries, this variety is self-fertile and a strong producer, adding seasonal variety to the orchard’s offerings.
- Pyrus communis ‘Conference’ (Pear): Chosen for its reliable fruiting and rich, juicy pears, this variety is a staple in many British orchards, making it a perfect fit for this project.
